Oris and the Reef Restoration Foundation
Major coral bleaching events have left the world’s reefs in great peril. To preserve and protect these life-giving natural bodies, Oris has partnered with the pioneering non-profit Reef Restoration Foundation (RRF). First joining forces in 2018, on the brand’s mission to bring Change for the Better, Oris sponsored one coral tree nursery within the reef. Not only this, but they also produced a number of beautiful watches; this Limited Edition IV being the fourth of the series.
On first impressions, this watch is absolutely beautiful. But, its appearance is only half of the story. The watch will directly support Oris’ ongoing financial commitment to the RRF’s coral-tree-planting mission. The money from the sponsorship, and any donations, will aid the non-profit to employ a core team of field operatives with requisite skills and experience. In addition to this, the arrangement includes five watches. Their purpose; to promote the relationship and to convert to cash in support of the RRF.
The All-New Oris Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV Watch
The Dial and Movement
Symbolic of the turquoise and blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef, the dial features a vivid gradient blue dial. A rare occurrence for Oris, the dial gradient falls vertically from 12 o’clock, rather than emanating from the centre position. The dial also features large luminescent baton indices and hands for optimal readability. This model is based on the next-generation Aquis Date Calibre 400, so the background of the date aperture at 6 o’clock matches the dial colour. While a small and subtle detail, it ensures fluidity in the overall design of the watch. Domed on both sides, and with an anti-reflective coating on the inside, a sapphire crystal protects the dial; it ensures for maximum clarity.
Housed within the high-quality stainless steel case is Oris’ game-changing Calibre 400 automatic movement. Beating at a frequency of 28’800 A/H (4 HZ) and with 21 jewels, it provides the watch with a 120-hour (5-day) power reserve. The movement is also accurate to -3/+5 seconds a day and it delivers elevated everyday anti-magnetism. As well as this, the movement comes with a variety of functions, including; centre hands for hours, minutes and seconds, a date window, an instantaneous date, a date corrector, a fine timing device and a stop-second.
The Case and Finishing Touches
Measuring 43.5mm in diameter, a multi-piece stainless steel case frames the dial. The watch also has a grey Tungsten bezel insert, and features a case back with a special starfish and coral engraving and the limited edition number. The Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV is limited to 2000 pieces. As previously mentioned, this watch is based on the next-generation Aquis Date Calibre 400, so the case, screw-in crown, crown protection and unidirectional rotating bezel have all been redesigned for improved ergonomics and performance. Moreover, thanks to this improved screw-in crown, the watch boasts an impressive 300 metres of water resistance.
A three-link stainless steel bracelet concludes the design of this watch. As with all Aquis Date Calibre 400 models, it also features the Oris-patented strap change and quick adjustment system. Designed for both ease-of-use and versatility, the strap complements the case greatly. Alongside this, it provides great comfort on the wrist.
