The New Seiko Prospex ‘Speedometer’ Chronograph Watch SSC937P1
This watch is built to meet the high standards required in extreme environments, this watch is perfect for sports lovers and adventure seekers. The design of this timepiece is inspired by the classic 1960s Mediterannean blue automobiles that were at the height of fashion when the Seiko Speedtimer was first created. This is a key time in the brand’s history that happened to align with when road trips and car rides were considered very glamorous. Seiko has perfectly captured this retro aesthetic and sense of adventure in the design of this all-new wristwatch.
The Dial and Movement
The eye is immediately drawn to the vibrant blue dial at the centre of this watch. Its unique tone and retro matte finish are emphasised by three black sub-dials that make up the functional chronograph display. The dial also features a date aperture between the four and five o’clock hour markers. Orange accents are dotted around the dial in a way that is reminiscent of an automobile’s speedometer. The dial features black hour and minute hands and black baton indices that are treated with a luminous substance. This glow ensures that the dial is easy to read whether you are cruising along the Mediterranean coastline in a vintage car or nighttime star gazing at the beach.
Anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the dial and its features. this material is coveted by watchmakers due to its hardwearing and scratch-resistant properties. Seiko has used a V192 quartz solar movement to power this timepiece. The brand relies entirely on in-house-built movements to ensure that it is as precise and reliable as possible. This particular movement is accurate to within +/- 15 seconds per month.
The Case and Finishing Touches
A classic stainless steel case houses the solar-powered movement and provides this timepiece with a water resistance of up to 10 bar. It features a tachymeter bezel, furthering the automotive theme of the timepiece. This case measures 39mm in diameter and 13.3mm in depth. This size ensures the watch makes an impact on the wrist without being too cumbersome to wear comfortably. The case back is detailed with each model’s unique production number, emphasising the limited edition status of this unique watch.
The watch is provided with two strap options, ensuring it is very versatile. The first is a stainless steel bracelet which will create a very timeless and elegant look on the wrist. This option is perfect for more formal occasions. However, Seiko has designed the second strap option with the vintage automobile theme in mind. It is crafted from brown leather and is detailed with punch holes. This unique appearance is reminiscent of a vintage steering wheel in a classic car. This strap option is the perfect choice for true retro car enthusiasts. The straps are easily changeable, making it quick and simple to change the look of this timepiece for any occasion.
