Why Black Friday Weekend
Black Friday started in the United States where everyone enjoys a bank holiday on the day following Thanksgiving. Retailers started offering discounts to get people out shopping on their extra day off work! It has been known as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the United States ever since 1932.
With the world becoming smaller and smaller thanks to the internet, the idea of Black Friday has started to spread worldwide. ASDA carried out the first UK Black Friday sale in 2013 and more retailers picked it up from 2014 onwards. The Monday following Black Friday became known as “Cyber Monday” in 2015, which led to many retailers extending their sales over a full Black Friday weekend.
Many retailers have some of their biggest sales of the year over this weekend. This has caused some scenes in recent years with people fighting over the best deals and police being called to assist security in stores. A few retailers have decided that the bad publicity from these scenes isn’t worth risking – so the best deals have started to instead!
