This Ocean’s Day it’s important to remember the great effect we have as a species on those around us. Some believe life started in the world’s ocean and for millennia it has helped humanity not only survive but thrive. To this day we are still dependent on the earth’s waterways just as much as they are dependent on us. To mark today, we wanted to collaborate and celebrate a brand that shares our love for the ocean. The new Alsta was created to bring romance back to wristwatches, specifically dive watches. Alsta doesn’t simply copy old models and rely on past notability. Though inspired by past models, the brand uses the expertise it has gathered over the years to build on designs and functions. Alsta continues to create inspiring, innovative timepieces.
Never following fashions and trends, Alsta has a passion for design and craftsmanship. The brand believes in conservation as opposed to consumption. Alsta tries to highlight the importance of preservation of the world’s oceans and their ecosystems. They strive to learn about and protect the truly important things. Not only does the watch brand emphasize the significance of educating themselves, but through its designs, Alsta brings awareness and educates the public and their fans as well. The watches the brand designs reflect that heritage and philosophy and use sustainably sourced materials where possible.
History of Alsta
Founded in the 1960s, Alsta started making high-quality timepieces for stylish men and women of intellectual and creative substance. The watches were created for professionals and people who appreciate durability and precision. Unfortunately, in the late 1970s. with the rise of the quartz movement and the start of the “quartz crisis” Alsta, like many other watchmakers, went out of business.
In 2014 the brand was resurrected. In 2017, after two years of planning, Alsta’s released their first timepiece for over 40 years. The new design was inspired by the watch which brought the brand to prominence. Worn by Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper in the cult classic movie Jaws, the Nautoscaphe dive watch became a fan favourite almost instantly. The thrilling release of the Nautoscaphe II gave the brand the needed push. In 2018 Alsta launched another model which would end up being a great success for the brand, the Surf N Ski.
Alsta Nautoscaphe Superautomatic 1970 Re-Edition Metal Bracelet SUPERAUTOMATIC-BRACELET
The Alsta Natoscaphe Superautomatic is a re-issue of the brand’s most famous model, the 1970s watch featured in Jaws. The new edition timepiece features improved functionalities and contemporary mechanisms. The design of the watch is slightly modernized but retains its classic recognizable style and silhouette. The case and bracelet of the watch are made of high-grade satin-finished stainless steel. The case measures 38 mm in diameter. A unidirectional bezel encircles the black dial. Increasing the watch’s durability is a sapphire crystal. The indices and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova. Features on the watch include a date aperture. Adding to the functionality is the shock resistance, anti-magnetism and an30 bar water resistance. The model is limited to 1975 pieces.
Alsta Surf N Ski Limited Edition Black PVD Plated Black Leather SURF N SKI
The Surf N Ski’s elegant vintage-inspired silhouette was created to appeal to both surfers and ski enthusiasts. Though inspired by the past, the model stands out with distinct modern characteristics. In the design, distinct angular features meet softer shapes and materials and thus create a model which uniquely complements any style. The angular case measures 40 mm and is made of black-plated stainless steel. The coating is matt giving the model a more refined look. Contrasting the otherwise black monochrome style is orange detailing on the outer dial and flange. White luminescent hands and indices add a more subtle touch of colour and aid in the watch’s readability. The watch face is protected by a domed anti-reflective hardened mineral crystal. Additionally, a black leather perforated strap is used to secure the watch and guarantee comfort. Features on the watch include a date aperture. The Surf N Ski is notably water-resistant to 30 bars or 300 meters. It is also anti-magnetic as well as shock-resistant. It’s important to note the model has an automatic movement. Alsta’s Surf N Ski is exclusive and only available in 100 pieces.
