Fasten your seatbelt, and prepare for takeoff! In exciting news, Junghans has released two new versions of the Pilot Chronoscope. These timepieces breathe history as Junghans look back on a long tradition of pilot’s watches; one in which the wristwatch for pilots is without a doubt a milestone. The so-called Bundeswehr chronograph is the root origin of the Pilot model family and the inspiration for the two new variations of the Pilot Chronoscope. These are not just suitable for wear in the cockpit, either, but also for a relaxing flight in business class. Intrigued to learn more about this pilot watch duo? Then read on for more.
The All-New Junghans Pilot Chronoscope Watches
The Dial and Strap
The new Pilot Chronoscope watches take off in two variants. The polished variant (27/3493.00) comes with a gradient dial, whose matte grey lacquer becomes darker toward the dial’s perimeter. The matte variation (27/3492.00) has the same dial effect but is dark green in the centre. Both have recessed totalisers for permanently small seconds, while the minute counters are lacquered black to achieve an elegant and ever-iconic panda look; with a small seconds sub-dial at 3 o’clock and a 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock. Especially large Arabic numerals provide each dial with a cockpit charm, and for optimal legibility, the hands and indices feature an eco-friendly luminous coating. In addition, each dial bears the brand’s historical logo; which stands for Junghans’ traditional attachment to aviation.
The all-new watches come on a vintage riveted leather strap which coordinates with the dial. So the dark grey variant comes with a black and brown leather strap and the dark green model comes with a dark green and black leather strap. The rivets in the straps are a testament to the robust and durable nature of each watch; they hold the strap securely in place. Further highlighting this great security, each strap fastens with a stainless steel buckle.
The Case and Movement
A high-polished stainless steel case frames the dark grey variant, whereas a matte satin-finished stainless steel case frames the dark green variant. And while the finish differs, each case measures 43.3mm in diameter. A bidirectional rotating bezel, with a luminous dot and a scale of 60-minute markings, also frames the dial; it is reminiscent of the 12 concave notches in the bezel of the 1950s Junghans model. Moreover, anti-reflective sapphire crystal makes sure that neither the watch’s visuals nor its legibility are impaired. On the posterior, the stainless steel case back, which is retained by 7 screws, features an ‘Aviation’ engraving. Whilst adding to the overall design, it also emphasises the strong connection between aviation and timekeeping.
Beating at the heart of each Junghans Pilot Chronoscope is a self-winding Caliber J888.03 movement; which boasts up to 42 hours of power reserve without the chronoscope function. The rhodium-plated movement, with blue screws, also offers a beautiful rotor with stripe finishing and an engraved Junghans logo. As well as this, the movement features a diamond cut on barrel, a wheel train and a balance bridge.
