All-New Squale 1521 Marina Militare Watch

Marking its longstanding relationship with the Italian Navy, Squale has unveiled its all-new 1521 Marina Militare. The Swiss brand, now in its 65th year, has a long and fruitful partnership with the Navy that began over 40 years ago when they first supplied watches to the Navy. Hence, the choice of the 1521 is symbolic, as this was the first model Squale gave to them. Limited to 500 pieces, the 1521 Marina Militare is a celebratory, historical, and high-performance watch; it carries on the legacy of the blueprint collection perfectly. Truly a unique and significant piece, keep reading if you want to discover more about the Squale 1521 Marina Militare!

The Dial and Case

An important symbol for both the Navy and Squale, the dominant element of the watch is the colour orange. The black dial, with a brossé finish, exhibits a mix of applied polished steel indices and hands. Along with the dial, they create a unique play of light. The dial also features the iconic 1521 minute hand, the official Navy logo and a minute track around the flange; all of which are that bright and symbolic orange colour. Further playing with this colour, the minute hand and first quarter of the bezel feature it in the form of SuperLuminova. The rest of the hands, indices and bezel markings feature a standard SuperLuminova coating. For increased functionality, a date aperture replaces the 3 o’clock position. A flat and anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the dial. So even if you’re at the depths of the ocean, clarity levels are excellent!

Measuring 42mm in diameter, a brushed 316L stainless steel case, with polished bevels, frames the dial. Alongside this is a unidirectional bezel, of the same material, with a black aluminium insert. Since the bezel can only rotate anti-clockwise, it is a safer way of tracking bottom time whilst diving. Overleaf, the screw-in case back showcases the logo of the Italian Navy as well as the edition number. These details add both historic and symbolic value, making it a unique and remarkable timepiece. Moreover, thanks to the screw-in crown, the Squale 1521 Marina Militare boasts an impressive 500 metres of water resistance.

The Movement and Finishing Touches

Housed within the high-quality stainless steel case is a Sellita SW 200-1 automatic movement. Beating at a frequency of 28’800 A/H (4 HZ) and with 26 jewels, it provides the Squale 1521 Marina Militare with a 38-hour power reserve. Additionally, the automatic movement has an Elaboré grade and an improved accuracy of +/-7 seconds per day.

To enhance the functionality of the watch, the Squale 1521 Marina Militare comes with a water-resistant, black, microfiber strap that fastens with a buckle clasp. Its orange stitching, and orange underside, reinforces the significance of the colour and the part it plays within Squale and the Navy’s relationship. However, if this strap is not quite to your taste, an additional Squale-branded, natural rubber, black strap also comes included with the watch. Two straps, with two different appeals, ensures the watch is a versatile piece perfect for everyday wear.
