Today Seiko unveils new 5 Sports Checkered Flag models! This will come as a very exciting launch for fans of the brand and its vintage-inspired designs. The Seiko 5 Sports collection is best known for over fifty years of reliability, durability, performance and value. These characteristics make the range a firm favourite with Seiko collectors around the globe. The two new additions to the family are part of the ‘Retro Colour Collection’, inspired by iconic heritage timepieces from 1969. Features from the original ‘Checkered Flag’ are prominent in these modern reinterpretations, making these new timepieces the perfect collectors item for avid Seiko fans.
The New Watches
As part of the Seiko 5 Sports collection, these two new models have the five key identifying features of the range: an automatic movement, a day date display, water resistance, a recessed crown and a durable case and bracelet. The watches maintain much of the distinctive look of the original 1969 pieces by using the same dial design with 60s-style hands and the same bold checkered bezel.
The new design is available in either a Petrol Blue (SRPK65K1) or a Black and White (SRPK67K1) colour palette. The Petrol Blue model features a striking blue dial adorned with Lumibrite-treated black hour and minute hands and orange second hand. The bezel is intricately decorated with a blue and white checkered design. For those who prefer a monochromatic look, the Black and White model exhibits a black dial with Lumibrite-treated silver hands and indices. A pop of colour can be found in the form of an orange second hand and hints of blue in the minute track. The rotating bezel that frames the dial is designed in bold, contrasting black and white.
The Details
Each watch features a day date display at the 3 o’clock position on the dial. The dial and its features are protected by curved Hardlex crystal to further the vintage-inspired aesthetic of the watches. This is held in a stainless steel case that measures 42.5mm in diameter and 13.4mm in depth. This case size is sure to make an impact on the wrist whilst remaining comfortable to wear. In order to further increase the wearer’s comfort, the crown is positioned at 4 o’clock on the case. This positioning prevents it from digging into the back of the hand.
The new watches are both powered by calibre 4R36 automatic movements that provide up to 41 hours of power reserve. The wearer can observe and enjoy this movement using the exhibition case back. Emphasising the unique nature of these timepieces, the case back is engraved with the phrase ‘SPECIAL EDITION’. Each of the designs is completed with a classic and timeless stainless steel bracelet. To ensure security, the bracelet is fastened using a three-fold clasp with a push button release. These watches are both water resistant up to 100 metres (10 bar).
