The Rhino Emerald
The new world’s largest emerald has been named ‘the rhino emerald’. It is fairly rare that emeralds are given names with only the most impressive specimens receiving this honour. The gemstone has also been referred to as a single crystal Chipembele. The word ‘chipembele’ translates to ‘rhino’ in the indigenous Zambian dialect of Bemba. The gemstone was discovered at Gemfields’ Kagem mine in Zambia in 2021 and has just received this admirable recognition. This location is the world’s single largest producing emerald mine. The emerald weighs an incredibly impressive 7525 carats or 1.505 kilograms. The accolade was unveiled at the Gem Genève trade show.
For an emerald this large to have formed, the conditions must have had to be near perfect. The gemstone has a distinct hexagonal crystal with a rich green colour. The specimen has an unusual lack of inclusions and a viewer can see deep into the stone with the naked eye. This gemstone is of very high quality as well as being unusually large, making it an especially exciting find. It has been announced that a portion of the proceeds of the sale of the gemstone was donated to the North Luangwa Conservation Programme in Zambia. This programme helps with the conservation of the black rhinoceros for which the emerald was named.
