Earlier this month, Seiko introduced the 2022 Black Series limited editions. The new timepieces joining the brand’s Black Series are re-interpretations of iconic timepieces from 1965 and 1970. Though scuba diving is a fantastic experience many divers say there’s nothing like night diving. The practise allows you to experience a whole new mysterious world. Bioluminescent plants and organisms will make your adventure that much more magical. Additionally, a large number of reef animals are asleep during the day so night diving gives you the possibility of seeing a large number of species in action.
Wanting to invoke this unique experience in its watches, Seiko has taken elements from night diving and used them as inspiration for the new line. The black cases are meant to symbolise the still darkness of the ocean while the orange markers are the diver’s light illuminating it. All three models have an automatic movement calibre 6R35 and a power reserve of up to 70 hours. A brown polyester fabric strap secures the watches. Each watch comes with an additional silicone strap.

This first model in the new line is inspired by the first Japanese diver’s watch. A re-interpretation of the 1965 model, this Seiko features a 40.5 mm black stainless steel case with hard coating. Both the bezel and the case feature a brushed finish. In addition, the first 15 minute markers on the bezel are orange. The model also has an orange luminescent second hand, luminescent markers, a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position. The watch is water-resistant up to 200 meters or 20 bars. The curved anti-reflective sapphire crystal guarantees the watch’s readability.

The inspiration behind this watch is its 1968 predecessor. The vintage watch boasted a 300-meter water resistance and a 10-beat automatic movement. The modern version of the iconic timepiece has a 20 bar water-resistance. Its durable 42mm case is made of black-plated hard-coated stainless steel. The sapphire crystal is anti-reflective. The watch features luminescent indices and hands and orange detailing on the bezel up to the 20th minute. The watch also has a date aperture at 3 o’clock.

The last model in the lineup was inspired by a watch worn by adventurer Naomi Uemura between 1974 to 1976. Seiko has preserved the iconic shape of the original case. The modern re-interpretation, however, has improved water resistance and durability. The crystal on the watch is a curved anti-reflective sapphire. Though the 42.7 mm stainless steel case has kept its shape, it now features black hard-coating. The watch’s durability has been increased to 200 meters or 20 bars. As with the other watches in this line, the bezel has orange markings. The hands as well as the indices are luminescent. Placed at 3 o’clock is a date aperture.
