Seiko and Brian May
The connection between Seiko and Brian May goes all the way back to the 1970s. It was in this decade that Brian May first travelled to Japan and purchased a Seiko watch whilst on his travels. Brian May has worn a Seiko diver’s watch for 40 years. For all of these years, May has travelled the world with his two most faithful companions: his Seiko and his guitar. The new timepiece is named the “Red Special II” as it is inspired by Brian May’s ‘Red Special’ guitar. This guitar features a gold-accented design which is also incorporated into the watch. This gold colour is inspired by the latest remastered Brian May solo albums within his ‘Gold Series’. Additionally, proceeds from this timepiece will be donated to The Mercury Phoenix Trust. This charity was founded by Brian May, Roger Taylor and Jim Beach in memory of Freddie Mercury.
The Watch
The new watch uses the Seiko 5 Sports watch design. This design was selected due to its 50-year reputation of reliability, durability and performance. The ‘5’ in the name stands for the five key features of the watch. These are an automatic movement, day-date display, water resistance, recessed crown and a durable case and bracelet.
The Dial and Movement
The dial of this watch is red in colour and features a black detail that creates the shape of the outline of a guitar. The dial is detailed with luminous dot indices and gold coloured hour, minute and second hands. A weekday and date aperture is positioned at 3 o’clock on the dial. The dial is protected by hardlex crystal. A black bezel frames the dial and provides the watch with additional functionality. The watch is powered by an automatic movement of the calibre 4R36. This provides the timepiece with a power reserve of up to 41 hours. Additionally, the watch is water-resistant up to 100 metres, or 10 bar.
The Case and Finishing Touches
The case of this watch is gold in colour to further its association with Brian May’s ‘Gold Series’. Brian May’s signature is featured on the case back along with the phrase ‘Limited Edition’ to emphasise how special this collaborative timepiece is. The case measures 42.5mm in diameter to ensure a comfortable fit on the wrist. This watch is secured on the wrist using a black and beige striped nylon strap. The design and material of the strap were selected to emulate guitar strings. The watch is presented in a guitar case inspired box. The box also contains a commemorative lucky sixpence, just like the one that Brian May plays the guitar with.
