Oris launch Sun Wukong limited edition watch after collaborating with the Shanghai Animation Film Studio Company. Very recently, Oris has launched its Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch. This new watch is a limited edition with only 2000 pieces available worldwide. This means that the watch will be in incredibly high demand amongst avid watch collectors and fans of the brand. This timepiece is unique as has been designed and produced in partnership with the Shanghai Animation Film Studio Company. The watch celebrates the 60th anniversary of the popular Chinese animated feature film, The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven. This fascinating timepiece introduced many unique details into the iconic Oris Aquis Date model.
The Cinematic Influence
The watch is based on The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven, a feature film that was produced by the Wan brothers and originally released by SAPS in 1961. This time was during the Second Golden Era of the Chinese film industry. The film had a huge audience and a wide reach. This is one of the reasons that Oris has chosen to collaborate with the Shanghai Animation Studio Company on the production of this eye-catching timepiece. The film is about the character of the Monkey King, otherwise known as Sun Wukong. He is a mythical creature from the sixteenth century classic Chinese novel titled ‘Journey to the West’.
Sun Wukong is a monkey who was born from stone. He acquired supernatural powers and uses them to rebel against heaven. The designers of this timepiece wanted to include all aspects of Sun Wukong. They had to be very imaginative to find ways to capture the character’s furious motion within the small space of a wristwatch.
The All New Watch
Unique Features
In the story, Sun Wukong has a red pillar with gold tips that he shrinks down to create a staff. This prop is an iconic aspect within the original tale. It was important to Oris’s designers that it was featured in the limited edition timepiece. The second hand is red in colour with a gold tip to represent this staff. Repeated flashed of blue are used in the dial of the watch to create an eye-catching centre and show how fast the Monkey King spins whilst in battle.
The Dial
This timepiece features a bold blue dial that will turn heads whatever the occasion. The dial is decorated with light blue flashes. Additionally, silver baton indices and silver hour and minute hands are placed on the dial. This watch uses the iconic design of the Oris Aquis Date model and so features a small date aperture at 6 o’clock on the dial. Domed sapphire glass is used to protect this intricate dial. The glass is treated with an anti-reflective layer so that the dial and all of its details can be seen, even under the brightest lights.
The Case and Movement
An ocean blue ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel surrounds the dial. Ceramic is a very desirable material in watchmaking as it it very durable and has an attractive finish. The bezel is one of the most vulnerable parts of a watch, so making it from ceramic ensures that it will be far more resilient against any knocks and bumps it will encounter. The case of the watch is crafted from stainless steel for a durable and classic finish. The screw-down crown is protected by crown guards to ensure that no damage is accidentally done to the movement. An automatic movement is housed within the stainless steel case. This movement provides the watch with up to 38 hours of power reserve and creates the sweeping or ‘spinning’ effect with the second hand.
The Finishing Touches
The case back of this unique limited edition timepiece is engraved with an image of the head of the Monkey King and his staff. Additionally, the unique number of each watch is engraved on the back to emphasise the limited edition nature of the timepiece. The watch is secured on the wrist using a timeless stainless steel bracelet that allows for a robust finish that will never go out of style. This timepiece is water resistant up to 300 metres, meaning that it is suitable to wear for most water sports.
