Father’s Day is an internationally recognised celebration that it acknowledged differently in many cultures. In the United Kingdom, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of every June. This year the day falls on the 20th June 2021. Many families celebrate the day by giving their father figures cards and gifts. A Brief History of Father’s Day
Father’s Day is an occasion that is used to honour fatherhood and paternal bonds. It was first celebrated in the United States of America as a way to mark the tragic deaths of many men and fathers in a mining accident. The celebration was held in West Virginia on the 5th July 1908. The event was the creation of Grace Clayton whose father sadly died in the accident.
Another Father’s Day event was held with the influence of Sonora Dodd in 1910. She wanted to acknowledge her own father’s efforts in raising their family after her mother died in childbirth. The event was intended to be held on 5th June, Dodd’s father’s birthday, but it was delayed until the third Sunday of the month to give the preachers enough time to prepare their sermons.
A more widespread Father’s Day celebration did not become popularised until the 1930s when Dodd enlisted the help of some merchants. The merchants realised that they may be able to profit from such an occasion and aided Dodd in spreading the message of Father’s Day. Their efforts drew presidential interest from Woodrow Wilson, but despite several attempts the holiday was not yet formally recognised.
It was not until Lyndon Johnson’s presidency that the date for Father’s Day was officially designated in 1966. This was signed into law by Richard Nixon in 1972. As has been the case with several other holidays, the UK followed in the USA’s footsteps and began celebrating Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June each year.
