Tissot’s Heritage Memphis watches are a sight to behold. Inspired by the Memphis design style from the 1980s, these new additions to Tissot’s portfolio stray from the brand’s established classic elegant style. The unique dial design complements the bright colours chosen for the additional straps the models come with. Though unusual for Tissot, these pop culture-inspired timepieces uphold the brand’s values and high standards. Bold and unconventional, the Heritage Memphis models are truly one of a kind and ideal for those who are not afraid to stand out and announce who they are.
What is The Memphis Desing Style?
In December 1980 Italian designer and architect Ettore Sottsass gathered a group of young designers to discuss the feature of design. At the time Modernism had been the most prevalent movement and Sottsass and his group wanted to reconceptualise the trends of the time. They named themselves the Memphis Group, inspired by a Bob Dylan record playing on repeat in the background. The name Memphis later took on a deeper meaning as it beautifully encompassed the groups’ vision for the design movement. Symbolic of both the city Memphis in Tenessee and the Ancient Egyptian city, the name began representative of the ambiguous nature of the style itself. Later the style became known as Memphis Milano.
Memphis itself is characterized by bold and bright colours, abstract motifs and asymmetrical shapes. The designers often used materials such as plastic laminates and terrazzo. Memphis was popular only for a short time, from 1980 to 1987, however to this day it still inspires fashion and interior designers.
Limited Edition Models
A unique detail shared by all watches in this line is the Memphis inspired dial. The design of the dial is boldly geometrical. Its monochrome black and white colour palette is functional as well as fashionable. The high contrast between the two colours and the large hour-markers ensures ultimate legibility. In keeping with Memphis’ abstract style, the watch’s second’s hand has been transformed into a small rotating disc marked with a dot at the centre of the dial.
All models are powered by a quartz movement. Increasing the durability of the watches is a scratch-resistant domed sapphire crystal. The watches are water-resistant up to 5 bars or 50 meters.
