Gold is one of the first metals to be used by humans with traces of its use dating back to 40,000 BC. The metal was important to many ancient civilizations and was used in decoration as well as jewellery. Gold is associated with the divine and with perfection. Most likely, other than its malleability, a part of its popularity is due to the metal occurring in a free elemental form. This means it can be found in its pure form uncombined with other elements. Over the years, as we learned more about metals, we began experimenting in order to change the gold aesthetically or to better its properties. Below we take a closer look at rose gold, its properties and its uses.
Properties and Composition of Rose Gold
Rose gold, also known as red gold or pink gold, has become increasingly popular in the last decade. It was even named Pantone’s “Colour of the Year” for 2016. Its feminine pink colour is what makes it appealing to jewellers and customers alike. Primarily used in jewellery and decorations, rose gold first became popular in Russia in the early 19th century. Its prevalence in the country is also what led it to be known as Russian gold at the time.
Rose gold is an alloy between gold and copper. The toughness of the copper strengthens the gold. This makes rose gold much stronger and more durable than both white and yellow gold. Though red, pink and rose gold might be used interchangeably when speaking about the metal, each one denotes a different ratio of copper and gold and sometimes the presence of other metals. 24-carat gold is gold in its purest form with a gold percentage of 99.9% or above. In rose gold the carat usually indicates the amount of gold, while the rest of the percentage is made of mostly copper and other metals, for example, 18-carat rose gold is made of 75% gold, 22.25% copper and 2.75% silver. On the other hand, 18-carat red gold is 75% gold and 25% copper. The highest carat rose gold available is 22-carat and it is known as crown gold.
