On June 3rd, luxury watch brand Longines launched their newest line of sports watches, The Spirit collection. Inspired by pioneers of the aviation industry, The Longines Spirit collection embodies the brand’s desire to encourage a new era of exploration. Longines’ new line is dedicated to the explorers from history who dared to challenge the norm, who modelled the world and traversed the globe with no reservations.
The elegant design of the watches from the collection is inspired by the original pilot watches of the early 20th century. The case and dial are large. In the past pilots needed to be able to read their timepieces very quickly without taking their attention away from the plane. The large dial with contrasting hour-markers allowed this to be done a lot quicker. The hour markers and hands are also luminescent, to aid in flying at night. A large crown also features on all models, as a large crown allows for easier setting of the watch when wearing gloves.
Longines has done what it does best and has combined the sophisticated design with outstanding functionality and craftsmanship. Even though the design is vintage-inspired the mechanisms in the models are state-of-the-art. Pilot watches need to be extremely accurate and durable. The watches from the Spirit collection all have a monocrystalline silicon balance spring in order to guarantee ultimate precision.

A timepiece with a distinctive classic design, this model from the Longines Spirit Collection has retained its authentic vintage tone. The large case and dark dial make the watch easier to read. Made of stainless steel, the case is durable and maintains the retro aesthetic of the line. Highlighting the design is a dark leather strap with topstitching. The topstitch tones the design down and gives the watch a more casual look. Applied white Arabic numerals contrast the dial. As with all other models in the line the hands and the hour-markers are filled with Super-LumiNova. Features on the model include a date display.

If you’re after a more timeless modern look, the Spirit bracelet model is ideal for you. The bracelet and 40mm case are both made of stainless steel. The all-metal design of the watch gives it a more classic look. The continuity through the collection, however, has not been broken as the dial design carries a slight vintage touch. A large crown, a silver textured dial and large hour-markers are a nod to the original inspiration of the line. The watch comes with a date aperture.

The Chronograph watch is the sportiest model in the Spirit collection. The sunray dial is in rich blue colour. A leather strap with white topstitch detailing matches the dial in a similar dark blue. The 42 mm dial is large and made of stainless steel. The overall look of the model is classic however its colour gives it a more contemporary tone. Sandblasted steel hands and large Arabic numeral hour markers contrast the dial for easier reading. The chronograph subdials are a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a 12 hour counter at 6 o’clock. Other features on the model include a date aperture and a small seconds sundial at 9 o’clock.
