Bronze has become more and more prevalent in the production of wristwatches in recent years. With its properties and aesthetic being preferred to other materials in many special edition watches. We have recently seen the KonTiki Diver Bronze from Eterna, which was a fantastic limited edition watch celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Kon-Tiki expedition. Around a year ago we also saw a fantastic new Aikon bronze from Maurice LaCroix and of course the limited edition Oris, Carl Brashear chronograph with a bronze case.
The new found love for bronze watches is not entirely clear with the material being centuries old, but it is now the go-to for any brand looking to produce a unique watch, and step up their design. The reason that this particular material is so well loved is its unique properties, the way that the surface of bronze will patina over time creating a completely unique look depending on how, where, and what the watch is worn for.
Mühle Glashütte Bronze Yacht-Timer
To continue the bronze trend, Muhle Glashutte have produced a never-before-seen Yacht-Timer constructed from aluminium bronze. The watch features a rugged blue canvas strap, with the same shade occupying the dial and the bezel insert. WIth a 44mm case this is a bold statement watch that is going to stand out.
Inside the watch is a modified Sellita SW 200-1 automatic movement with Mühle’s patented woodpecker neck regulation. This powers the 300m water resistant watch for up to 38 hours (power reserve). As far as this bronze Yacht-Timer is an attention grabbing watch with its bold blue hue, and that bronze case, it still retains an element of class and decorum.
This piece could easily be dressed up and worn out, if you are not a diver, or sailer, then that does not mean you cannot own this watch. Somewhat of a collectors item to some, the bronze will change with every touch, scratch or contact with water meaning that some will prefer to keep it in pristine condition! But, if this is not the approach you would want to take, then you can really find some amazing looks on these bronze watches after some time, with the colour completely changing to a blueish green in some cases, a truly unique watch!
