Sneakers are definitely something that millenials are very interested in and something that we often match up to our outfits when getting ready to go to work, on a night out of even just to meet some friends. In this article I wanted to take a look at some of the best releases of sneakers from this year so far and see if I could pair them up to a watch from out store to help you combine your outfit and accessories to match. I took the most popular sneakers fro this year from High Snobiety a website which I regularly read and follow on social media.
All the shoes that they featured were Nike Air Max however they varied in collection, range and gender so it gave me a good range of sneakers to match to watches.
COMME des GARÇONS x Nike Air Max 180
These shoes are priced at £195 and are for both men and women however I chose a women’s watch as I personally think more women would buy these than men. For those who know COMME des GARÇONS (you might remember them from their heart with a face design) and Nike will know that they have released a whole range of collaboration shoes over a number of years. As High Snobiety mentioned in their article is it definitely worth taking note any time the two brands come together to make a collaboration model as they are usually very unique models and most people myself included really like individual pieces or limited edition runs of popular brands. This specific model was shown on the runway during the SS18 shows at Paris Fashion Week and the very bright coloured Air Max 180’s were released in a triple team of colourways, pink being the foundation colour of each model.
The watch I have chosen to match these shoes is the Daisy Dixon DD002PG, this is a chronograph model which is just as vivid as the Nike Air Max. It features a date display between the four and five o’clock position and shiny rose gold elements throughout the watch including the case, sub dials, hands, minute and hour makers. The strap is a textured genuine leather that has been dyed bright pink and matches the pink colour of the Nike Air Max pretty well. The watch is priced at £79.00 RRP and we have it on sale at a price of £49.00
Kendrick Lamar x Nike Cortez
Kendrick Lamar has done a number of collaborations with Reebok which were questioned by many fans worldwide who has mixed reviews however following this “Kung Fu Kenny” has now been enlisted by Nike to rework a Compton Classic that I’m sure most of you will have seen at some point called the Nike Cortez. The new collaboration shoes were released on the 45th anniversary of the Cortez shoes however they were limited to only a US release which did upset some fans. They featured a small wink towards Kendrick Lamars new album “DAMN” and had the title embroidered onto the side of the shoe itself in red stitching written in bubble font.
The watch that I matched to these shoes was a Casio G-Shock G-7900A-7ER Alarm Chronograph. It is a digital watch with a whole range of functions. I chose this watch as the coloured matched up well with the white and the blue tongue of the watch matching the blue and white combination of the watch. The watches features include shock resistant case, an auto illuminator, alarm, low temperature resistance, stopwatch, tide graph for measuring altitude and it has a world time feature to allow you to see accurate time in in all major cities around the world.
Nike Air Max 98 “Gundam”
The Air Max 98 made a bit of a disappearance after its release died down however in 2016 there was a Supreme collaboration which featured them and since then they have made a comeback with new colourways landing in early 2018. The “Gundam” colourway featured above is a tribute to the RX-78-2 from the popular Gundam sci-fi series, this Mech anime features a robot in Red, blue and white which is where the colours in the sneakers come from. It is an amazing design and fits the 90’s silhouette perfectly whilst also hinting at the Gundam series.
The watch I chose to go with these sneakers is the Citizen Gents Endeavour AW1424-54L. I felt like this watch is perfect for the Nike x Gundam crossover sneakers as the gold, blue and red works perfectly coupled with the sneakers and the stainless steel bracelet is a nod towards to Mecha Anime side of the sneakers. The watch features a date display, unidirectional bezel, glowing hands and markers and it is water resistant to an impressive 200 metres.
ACRONYM x Nike Air VaporMax Moc 2
The Air VaporMax Moc 2 was part of a collaboration with modular apparel brand ACRONYM and Nike. It was one of three colourways which is set to be very popular however it is not yet released so we will have to wait and see if this is true. Chief designer for ACRONYM Errolson Hugh described the resulting sneaker by saying “There is absolutely nothing retro about it.” The release for this watch is set to be one of the best so far this year with a western themed showdown video featuring John Mayer and a whole host of highly art-directed assets.
The watch that I chose to go with the VaporMax Moc 2 was the Hugo Boss Black 1513336 Mens Yachting Timer II. The watch fits Errolson Hugh’s statement as well as the shoe does! It is modern and futuristic. The colours used within the dial as well as the patterned back to the dial make this watch ready for the next century. It features a chronograph, date display, glowing hands and markers and is water resistant to 100 metres. The watches case is stainless steel which is sturdy and has been coated in a black IP plating, the darkness with neon highlights matches the shoe perfectly.
