Titanium watches are often the most popular, but why?
Titanium is a non corrosive and ductile material that is bio-compatible. This means titanium watches do not cause allergic reactions as stainless steel watches sometimes do. Modern Titanium watches are some of the strongest and most durable watches ever made, especially the latest Seiko and Citizen Titanium watches which use an IP treatment which makes them scratch resistant. The alloy is heated to over 2000 celsius and bombarded with electron beams. It then gets pressure-bonded and this creates an incredibly strong but also scratch resistant ionized titanium.
The Citizen X8 Chronometer was the first titanium watch in the world and that was released in 1970. Today Citizen watches utilize the next generation ‘super titanium’ with a unique IP treatment which makes their titanium watches scratch resistant.
This next generation of titanium watches by Citizen and Seiko are 5 times harder than stainless steel and over 40% lighter, using the latest surface-hardening technology. Titanium watches are the most popular in the Citizen and Seiko watch range. So what else is it about titanium watches that makes them so sought after?
The Seiko SSE003J1 and Citizen CA4016-51L
These latest models are made from high intensity Titanium which is almost indestructible and represents an amazing breakthrough in metal technology. Titanium is far more durable than steel and considerably lighter, making it the perfect for a wrist-watch.
Why Titanium is superior to stainless steel?
Stainless steel watches have a few cons when compared to titanium watches. For a start they are heavy, so if the weight of the watch is a concern then titanium would be a better choice. This is especially true if that watch is a bulky design. Take for example the best selling Citizen Skyhawk range. The same watch is produced in both stainless steel and titanium. The stainless steel version looks bulky and feels heavy on the wrist while in comparison, the titanium version of the same watch, the Citizen JY0010-50e feels light in the wrist, despite looking heavy. Titanium watches are both light and strong.
Then there is Nickel allergy to consider. It is a fact that some people are allergic to nickel, a metal sometimes present in stainless steel watches. If you are allergic to nickel, as many are, this can make stainless steel watch a bad choice for you. People buying a top brand watch often want to make a fashion statement and titanium certainly does that compared to stainless steel.
In summary
Titanium is twice as strong as stainless steel yet weighs half as much, the latest super Titanium is up to 4 times lighter and stronger. Titanium watches are also far more durable. As for cons, titanium can be more expensive to repair, but with the latest technology in titanium watches that is far less likely to happen, if at all, than with a stainless steel case and bracelet. Titanium watches are popular for a reason and once you have owned one you will never go back to stainless steel.
