Those of you who like a variety of features, absolute daily reliability and a little bit of attitude from a watch, have inevitably heard of G-shock. G-Shock is a brand that has been bringing us tough, technologically superior timepieces in stylish, chunky cases since 1983.
History of G-Shock Watches
This chic subsidiary of Casio recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. The milestone was marked with a series of swanky, celebrity-packed celebrations across the globe that epitomises the larger-than-life image of the brand. An image equally loved by urban musicians and artists, athletes, photographers and stylists who all have an extra bit of intangible coolness in common.
The brand was first conceptualised in 1981, 2 years before it was launched. The idea behind G-Shock watches was that they would offer extreme durability and reliability. At the time the “triple 10” idea was born. The concept means that the battery of the watch will last up to 10 years, it can survive a 10-meter fall and all models would be water-resistant to 10 bars (or 100 meters). At the core of the watch was, and still is, its shock resistance. After its release in 1983 and a clever marketing stunt, G-Shock quickly rose in fame and popularity with the American market.
What does G-Shock have to offer?
First and foremost is the unparalleled shock resistance. That was the primary goal for young engineer Kikuo IBE when he set about creating the first G-shock. The proprietary design was developed to suspend the watch’s inner workings inside an equally advanced case structure. The watches continue to evolve on this philosophy today.
Moving to today’s range, there is something tailored to everyone. From the Sky Cockpit timepiece for budding pilots to the latest 30th-anniversary timepiece with its semi-digital display. Just this year, G-shock released their first fully analogue watch. It combines the same level of sports functionality with a more sophisticated look.

Beautifully demonstrating the versatility of G-Shock watches is this model. The watch is inspired by the earth. The white case and bracelet are made of resin. The colours and techniques used in making the resin give it its distinguishable look which is reminiscent of “stratum”. The watch sports a digital display with a double LED light. Amongst some of the features on the watch are alarms as well as a stopwatch.

Rose-gold indices and luminescent hands contrast the matt black aesthetic. A hard glass mineral crystal encases the hybrid analogue and digital dial. In addition to an alarm, a calendar and a timer the watch features a world timer. In true G-Shock fashion, the watch is also water-resistant up to 10 bars.
Casio G-Shock | Full Metal Bracelet | Black Dial | Radio Controlled AWM-500D-1AER
While this watch also features the distinctive chunky look of traditional G-Shock watches, its design is decidedly more futuristic. Using stainless steel instead of resin, the brand has created a truly stand-out piece. The model features both a digital as well as an analogue display. In addition, the black dial is contrasted by silver-coloured hands and indices. Furthermore, the watch has a hard mineral crystal increasing its durability. The watch has a countdown function and an LED display light as well as 5 daily alarms.
With such a wide portfolio it is easy to see how the brand is even stronger today than it ever has been. Every single watch has its individual flare making it look fresh on your wrist, yet still keeps the watch going in conditions where others would simply fail. The extensive features of G-Shock pieces put the icing on the cake. The result is a full compliment of unique aesthetics, unbeatable functionality and reliability in any situation.
